Wave deflectors Sassevaart, New lock Terneuzen

Since the end of 2017, work has been underway on the construction of the New Lock Terneuzen. With a length of 427 meters and a width of 55 meters, the lock will be one of the largest locks in the world. In terms of size, it is comparable to the locks in IJmuiden, Antwerp, and Panama.

The service harbor

In collaboration with Hakkers BV, we are working on the realization of the lock complex in Terneuzen. As part of the lock complex, a new service harbor with mooring places for tugboats is being constructed at the west outer harbor. To reduce wave activity in the harbor, we produce floating wave deflectors. The service harbor will consist of eight of these floating structures, of which we are producing two parts. The wave deflectors we create have a length of 44.6 meters and weigh between 130 and 150 tons.

The lock, measuring 427 meters in length and 55 meters in width, will be one of the largest locks in the world. In terms of size, it is comparable to the locks in IJmuiden, Antwerp, and Panama.

The wave deflectors

The floating modules are connected on-site at the entrance of the service harbor. The wave deflector is designed to allow tugboats to easily dock and undock. The top side of the entire wave deflector is equipped with walkways, bollards, railings, beams, and ladders. To ensure the wave deflector floats at the correct height, detailed buoyancy calculations were performed, taking into account centers of gravity, manufacturing tolerances, and the saltwater content.
