Johan Frisosluis

The Johan Frisosluis connects the IJsselmeer with the Frisian lake district. For water sports enthusiasts, the lock is an important gateway to the province. The old lock was nearly half a century old and no longer met the requirements in terms of capacity and safety.

Increased capacity

During the peak season, the Johan Frisosluis was a bottleneck for boat traffic. On the busiest days, waiting times exceeded two hours. The construction of a second lock put an end to these long delays and resolves the capacity issue at least until 2050.

The construction of the second lock ended these long waiting times and solves the capacity problem at least until 2050.

Safer

With a strong southwesterly wind, unsafe situations would arise at the lock, especially when many boats had to wait in the forebay for a lock cycle. In the new setup, this will occur hardly at all. The design of the new lock also enhances safety. The lock is more spacious, providing more room for maneuvering. Additionally, shorter waiting times reduce “approach stress.”

Climate-resilient

The new lock is climate-resilient. It is designed to withstand rising water levels and higher waves for the next fifty years. Machinefabriek Emmen, as a subcontractor of Ballast Nedam, constructed the lock gates and bridge of the new lock and fully renovated the existing lock and bridge.
