Fendering Haven Stein
Introducing a remarkable structure for the port of Stein (Limburg), home to companies including DSM. In addition to 250 meters of fendering, we built a lifting structure consisting of a main beam and two columns, each weighing 40 tons.
Port handling hazardous materials
Fendering protects quays from ship traffic. The Chemelot site in Stein has a port where many hazardous materials are handled, so safety is of utmost importance. For example, OCI Nitrogen supplies ammonia via pipeline. During transshipment onto inland vessels, the port must, by regulation, be completely closed to other shipping.
The lifting towers with the main beam between them serve this purpose. The beam functions as a lift, closing the port to other traffic during loading or unloading. After the operation, the lift opens via a vertical hoisting system powered by two large electric motors, allowing the vessel to safely depart. The entire structure was manufactured in Heeg, transported to Limburg, and the fendering was then installed on site.

66-meter-long main beam
The lifting towers and part of the fendering had already been installed in Stein, after which they awaited the massive 66-meter-long main beam. This beam was manufactured in Heeg in three sections and then assembled at our own quay. The lifting structure still needed to be equipped with moving components such as motors, winches, and pulley housings, which had to be loaded onto the pontoon. Fortunately, we enlisted the expertise of professionals from Schot, Mammoet, and Lekstroom for assistance.
Nauta involved early in the design
The closing structure itself was developed in close collaboration with Van den Biggelaar Civil and Hydraulic Engineering and Sitech, which provides support in site and manufacturing services for the process industry. Early collaboration in the project allowed Nauta to precisely tailor the design to the needs of the stakeholders. This resulted in an optimal solution with minimal investment. Once again, a great collaboration with all parties involved.
