A Safe Walking Route to the Nature Reserve

The Paradijssluice in Meppel is a place where engineering and nature meet. Following the development of a new residential area, the municipality reassessed the layout of the surrounding environment. To connect the new neighbourhood with the adjacent nature reserve, a new walking route was planned, running partly across the Paradijssluice.

Normally, the platforms of a lock are not designed for public use. The Municipality of Meppel and the Province of Drenthe therefore jointly investigated whether a new, safe pedestrian route across the lock gates could be created. The aim was to establish a future-proof connection that would provide safe and responsible access for walkers.

Collaboration

TruSteel Infra was invited by the Province of Drenthe to help develop a solution. This was a natural continuation of a long-standing partnership, during which maintenance works and bridge replacements, including those at Holslootbrug and Pijlerbrug, had previously been completed successfully.

The Goal: A Future-Proof Connection That Provides Safe Access for Walkers

A Design That Adapts to the Location

Based on the project specifications, TruSteel Infra developed an entirely new, curved platform design, providing sufficient space for pedestrians.

Following the preparatory work by TruSteel Infra, production and installation were assigned to our sister company, Nauta Heeg. This project brings together the strengths of TruSteel Group: from design to completion, our teams work seamlessly together.

Technical Modifications

Several technical modifications were required for the new design. The drive mechanism was repositioned to accommodate the curved platform, and the rack rod was extended. These adjustments ensure that the lock continues to operate fully as intended, while making the new walking route safer and more comfortable.

Giving Existing Components a Second Life

Giving Existing Components a Second Life

During the project, it became clear that parts of the original platform were still in good condition and could be reused. This platform, originally attached to the downstream lock gates, will be modified and subsequently installed on the upstream lock gates. The components are currently being stored at TruSteel MF Emmen and are scheduled for further processing next summer.
