Museum De Fundatie, Zwolle
The skyline of the historic centre of Zwolle used to be recognisable only by the Peperbus. Since 2012, this is no longer the only landmark of the city. Museum De Fundatie, situated on the border between the medieval city centre and the open 19th century park landscape, has been expanded with a spectacular spherical construction on the roof.
The design
The courthouse from 1838 designed in neoclassical style was meant to symbolize the unity in the legislation of the new kingdom. The building has a lot of symmetry on the outside, a monumental entrance and a central entrance hall over two floors.
In 2004, the former Palace of Justice was converted into a museum. The design of the extension in 2010 comes from BiermanHenket architects. An underground extension was spatially too complicated. That is why an extension on the roof of the monumental building was chosen. The superstructure is symmetrical in two directions, just like the substructure, but has a completely different shape. Together, the different volumes form a new urban development whole.

Spherical construction
The steel structure for this project was supplied and installed by Kampstaal. The total weight of the steel structure is approximately 275 tons. Eight steel columns have been placed throughout the building, which stand on their own foundations. These columns support the new extension. The structure of the sphere is approximately 10 meters high and has a surface area of approximately 25 by 40 meters. The sphere consists of 24 trusses, each rolled in four different radii, which are fitted with purlin supports that are welded at dozens of different angles. The extension is clad with 55,000 three-dimensional ceramic elements produced by Koninklijke Tichelaar from Makkum.
Where new and old meet. Museum De Fundatie has been given an appearance that suits the art it wants to present.
