Future Heat, Leiden

In collaboration with JP van Eesteren and Vattenfall, TruSteel Construction is contributing to the realisation of the Future Heat Leiden heating plant. The sustainable facility will make waste heat from the Port of Rotterdam available to the regional district heating network.

Waste heat as a new energy source

Along the A44, near Leiden Bio Science Park, TruSteel Construction is working with JP van Eesteren and Vattenfall on the construction of the De Sleutel heating plant. This facility is a key component of the Future Heat Leiden project, which will make waste heat from the Port of Rotterdam available to the regional district heating network.

Heat is transported from the port to Leiden via the WarmtelinQ pipeline. At the De Sleutel heating plant, this heat is transferred to the local district heating network. This allows heat that would otherwise largely go to waste to be put to use, helping to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based heat sources over time. Ultimately, the new heating system is intended to supply heat to approximately 10,000 homes and 200 businesses in the region. The project therefore contributes to making the regional energy supply more sustainable.

The new heating system is intended to eventually supply heat to approximately 10,000 homes and 200 businesses in the region.

Future Heat Leiden

A technically complex project with multiple functions

The combination of large-scale installations, different building components and architectural requirements places high demands on the structural design. The steel structure must not only meet the technical requirements but also integrate seamlessly with the other building components and facilities.

The De Sleutel heating plant consists of several components that work together to ensure a reliable heat supply. The heat transfer station (WOS) connects the WarmtelinQ pipeline to Leiden's district heating network. In addition, the peak-load and backup installation ensures that heat supply can be maintained during periods of high demand, malfunctions or maintenance. A third key component is the thermal storage tank. This large tank stands approximately 35 metres tall, has a diameter of 15 metres and holds around 3,500 m³ of water. It temporarily stores heat so that it can be used when demand increases.

Future Heat Leiden

From engineering to realisation

For Future Heat Leiden, TruSteel Construction is responsible for the engineering and realisation of the primary steel structure and various associated structural components. The steel structure has been developed in 3D to a level suitable for construction, complemented by workshop and installation drawings, layout plans and detailed structural calculations. Particular attention has been paid to the various connections and interfaces with the concrete structure.

In addition to the primary steel structure, TruSteel Construction is delivering and installing grating floors, stainless steel cable netting, wall and roof structures, balustrades, guardrails and steel staircases. Through this integrated approach, TruSteel Construction contributes to a safe, functional and carefully engineered structure for the heating plant.
