In 2014, the Municipality of Leeuwarden, the Province of Fryslân, and the IJshal Foundation agreed on the construction of the Elfstedenhal in Leeuwarden. A Frisian capital without an ice rink is unthinkable. Although Kampstaal's location is just outside Friesland, we were still allowed to handle the steel structures.
The Steelwork
A total of 700 tons of steel were used in the Elfstedenhal. The distinctive feature of the ice rink is the curved lines of the steel structure. Particularly striking is the unique interplay of steel and wooden trusses, which were welded together as a single assembly for the 400-meter track. There are 17 trusses in total, each 38 meters long and 5 meters high. These so-called lens beams were transported to Leeuwarden by special transport. Similarly, the trusses for the ice hockey rink, which also left our factory as a single assembly, were transported. These trusses are round at the top, but unlike those of the 400-meter track, they are straight at the bottom. The Construction Schedule
A unique aspect of this project is the construction schedule. A method was employed where everything planned for the day had to be completed on the same day. This sometimes meant working late into the evening during the construction process. Kampstaal assembled the 400-meter track in just two weeks. Additionally, the 64 wooden trusses were assembled in the same timeframe.
Sustainability
The modern ice rink features a 400-meter track and an ice hockey rink. The sustainable building is equipped with LED lighting and solar panels. Furthermore, the heat generated by the cooling system is used to heat spaces and shower water.
