Covered Market Floor
Due to a change in regulations, the sale of meat, fish, and cheese in the open air had to comply with increasingly stricter rules. The city of Rotterdam seized this opportunity, resulting in one of the most ambitious projects of the past decade: the construction of the most unique covered fresh market in the world. Located between the Grote Markt, Westnieuwland, and Dominee Jan Scharpstraat, the Rotterdam residential and shopping center now stands. The Rotterdam Markthal is the first covered market floor in the Netherlands.
The Construction Process
The City of Rotterdam initiated a competition that led to the first sketches of the building. Architect Winy Maas, together with real estate developer ProVast, succeeded in creating a spectacular design. On the site where it all began for the city of Rotterdam, the iconic market building now stands. Kampstaal has contributed in many ways to the construction of the Markthal. The forty-meter-high arch, made of natural stone with windows, is prominently visible in the surrounding area. Kampstaal provided the anchoring for this glass facade, as well as the grating walls for the parking garage beneath the Markthal. The multifunctional market stalls were realized in collaboration with Nauta Heeg. Together, we processed approximately 300 tons of galvanized steel into versatile stalls. Kampstaal also produced and installed the fences and stairs around some of the stalls. The cladding for a few of the stalls was designed by Kamplacon. A beautiful collaboration between the sister companies and contractor J.P. van Eesteren.

The result
The Markthal in Rotterdam has become a place people love to visit. A beautiful building with multifunctional market stalls that not only display fresh products but also house terraces. A fantastic project to which Kampstaal has contributed in many aspects
