Upgraded Separation Facility, AEB Amsterdam
Contributing to a circular future
In Amsterdam, the Afval Energie Bedrijf (AEB) (AEB) processes around 300,000 tons of household waste each year from Amsterdam, Ouder-Amstel, and Landsmeer. A significant part of this processing takes place in the sorting facility, where valuable materials such as plastics, beverage containers, and metals are extracted from the waste. The facility operates nearly 24/7 and plays a crucial role in the transition to a circular economy.
Time for renewal
After years of intensive use, some parts of the facility were due for replacement. For example, the existing shaking screens were at risk of mechanical failure, which could have affected the continuity of the process. AEB therefore decided to undertake a large-scale renovation of the sorting facility. The goal: increased processing capacity, improved safety, and better recycling results.
TruSteel Recycling was awarded the contract to carry out this renovation and worked closely with its sister companies MF Emmen TruSteel, Kampstaal TruSteel and Kamplacon TruSteel to achieve it.
With this upgraded sorting facility, AEB is now able to achieve higher processing capacity, improved safety, and better recycling results.
Smart phased construction
The removal of old facility components and the opening of the roof was the first step.
By working in phases, it was possible to start up part of the new facility after just 12 days! This was done to allow collected material to be shredded safely, due to the potential presence of nitrous oxide cylinders.
In the second dismantling phase, the outdated flat screens and other components were carefully hoisted out. Next, we installed new steel structures and platforms, followed by hoisting and positioning the new conveyor belts and drum screens. Several wind shifters and a long-parts separator were also installed.
After 12 weeks of reconstruction, the entire facility was brought back into operation according to plan.
Transport by road and water
One of the highlights of the project was the transport of the new drum screens. These impressive machines were first transported by road and then by water from Emmen to Amsterdam. On site, the drums were expertly hoisted and positioned in place.
Ready for the future
With the replacement of the shaking screens by new drum screens, the facility is now ready for the future. The upgraded sorting facility enables more efficient processing of the organic wet fraction (OWF), increases capacity, and directly contributes to a higher separation efficiency.
