Commissioned by the Amsterdam local authority, we completed the Gerda Taro Bridge in partnership with Ballast Nedam Connect in early 2023. The bridge connects the southern portion of Centrumeiland with Strandeiland and is part of a major route used by construction traffic for home building on Strandeiland.
spider heads
The contractor began foundation work for the Gerda Taro Bridge at the end of 2021, while in our production halls, we were hard at work preparing the support structures and bridge deck sections. We refer to the support structures for this 124 metre-long bridge as ‘spider heads’, which take the form of pillars that absorb the overall weight of the bridge field. The spider head structures were assembled one piece at a time in our production hall before being transported to Amsterdam. We produced five support structures in total, each with a multi-layer wet-paint coating for optimal protection against corrosion and weathering. We fabricated the complete bridge field in sections at our workshop using extreme precision to ensure a tight fit with the substructure. Our assembly team then assembled the bridge and frame on site.
Cooperation
Amsterdam now has a another bridge! Working with our client and partners, we were able to bring the bridge project to successful completion, with safety-conscious collaboration on the ground and full respect for one another’s interests as well as consideration for nearby projects and local residents.
